Huajiang Canyon Bridge is now the world’s highest deck

Update · September 2025 · Related: Highest Bridges

For nearly a decade the Duge Bridge (Beipanjiang) in Guizhou, China held the record for the highest bridge deck — about 565 m (1,854 ft) above the Beipan River, opened in 2016.

On 28 September 2025 the Huajiang Canyon Bridge (also called Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge) opened on the S57 Liuzhi–Anlong Expressway, also in Guizhou. Its roadway sits about 625 m (2,050 ft) above the Beipan River — roughly 60 m higher than Duge, a short distance upstream on the same river system.

  • Type: suspension bridge
  • Total length: about 2,890 m (9,480 ft)
  • Main span: about 1,420 m (4,660 ft)
  • Role: cuts a winding mountain crossing that once took hours down to a few minutes

Highest means deck height above the valley or water, not the height of the towers. Tower height is listed separately on our tallest bridges page (Millau Viaduct still leads that measure).

Our highest-bridges gallery still leads with Duge because we do not yet have a Huajiang photo in the archive. The listing note and this page exist so the record is stated correctly.

Husutong Yangtze River Bridge opened in 2020, not 2009

Correction · Related: Tallest Bridges

The Husutong Yangtze River Bridge (Hushutong) in Jiangsu, China is a combined rail-and-road cable-stayed crossing of the Yangtze. Its towers are about 325 m (1,066 ft) tall, which is why it appears on our tallest list.

An earlier BridgeX card listed the opening year as 2009. That date belongs to other Yangtze crossings of the same era (for example Sutong opened in 2008). Husutong itself opened to traffic in June 2020 after construction through the 2010s.

  • What changed: Opened year 2009 → 2020
  • What stayed the same: height, type, and location on the tallest-bridges page

The year on the Husutong card is now 2020. This page documents why the figure was updated.
